Reflexology is an alternative medicine method that is used to help stimulate certain reflex points in your feet, hands and ears that relate to every organ and area in your body. Reflexology has been around for thousands of years, studies have shown it can be dated as far back as 2330 B.C in ancient Egypt. It is a form of massage using a wooden stick or the thumbs in a technique known as “thumb walking” which is applying a certain amount of deep pressure to each reflex point, the therapist can stimulate or send a signal to that corresponding body part. Activating these reflex points can relieve tension, improve blood supply and help normalize body functions. For example when applying pressure to certain points on the big toe it’s said to relieve headaches and tension.
During a reflexology session the therapist feels for inconsistencies or also known as knots, hard areas, swelling, crunchiness, or an area that is sensitive to touch. It is extremely important for good communication between therapist and client making sure the client is letting the therapist know if any points are sensitive. A typical reflexology session can last anywhere from 30 to 90 minutes.
Reflexology is NOT a cure-all nor can it be used to diagnose any medical conditions. It merely detects imbalance, congestion, or inflammation and can send messages back to the brain to affect the areas by sending endorphins and more circulation.
What to expect in a Reflexology session
If we are not constantly on our feet then we are sitting and then there is the chance of poor circulation. Our feet are what let us stand upright and perform our daily activities most people will have aches. For example it is very common for people to have aches in the arch of their feet and that is also where your kidney, lungs and heart points are located. Now just because it’s sensitive or sore when the therapist presses there does not mean you have kidney problems. It could just be something as simple as you wearing the wrong type of insoles for your feet and have no relation to reflexology.
Is Reflexology for me?
I myself am a very firm believer in “you will never know if something is for you unless you try it” Of course if you strongly dislike deep pressure then maybe it isn’t for you. But if you are someone who likes deep pressure and feels like this is something you could benefit from I highly recommend it.
