Here at Oahu Spine & Rehab we serve patients every day that are part of a military family, currently serving in the military, or retired from the military. As an integrated health center we are happy to be a provider for the VA health care’s newest program, Veteran’s Choice. So many veterans in our country weren’t able to receive the health care that they needed, which is why veteran’s choice has been created to help improve VA health care. The Veterans choice program allows veterans to receive health care within your community instead of having to commute for your health care.
You are eligible for VA Choice if you have been (or could be) waiting for more than 30 days for VA medical care at a medical facility. You also are eligible if you live more than 40 miles away from a VA medical care facility or face one or more of what they have defined as “excessive travel burdens”. Travel burdens can include anything like seclusion, geographical challenges, or a medical condition. The staff at your normal VA facility will help determine if you are eligible for travel burdens based on your medical condition. In the states of Hawaii and Alaska the “excessive travel burdens” are not in place, so that all Veterans are able to go to any medical center.
To sign up for veterans choice insurance you have to make sure you are first eligible, then find the doctors that are participating in your area. After this you have to make sure you have any info about your regular VA Health Care as well as your other insurances. Then you schedule an appointment and make sure you are eligible by calling the Choice Program Call Center at 866-606-8198. If you are suffering from an injury or some sort of pain, you can give us a call at OSR directly after you enroll in order to make an appointment with us. Here at OSR we give veterans a one-stop-shop for pain, where we do all of the paperwork for you and there are ZERO out of pocket costs with VA Choice.
VA Choice also gives you the ability to fill your prescriptions at a non-VA pharmacy for a 14 day supply of a National Formulary drug if you submit a request for reimbursement to the VA. This can be helpful for antibiotics and other smaller prescriptions that are given to you by your VA Choice community care doctors. For any prescriptions needed for longer than the 14 days you will have to fill it at a VA pharmacy.
Remember that using VA Choice doesn’t change your current VA coverage. The choice program was only created to make things easier for veterans who are wanting to choose their own facilities and get care in their community.
