What Brought Me to OSR?

I landed back on this beautiful island in May. As soon as I landed I wanted to hit the ground running with my search for a job. I didn’t know what I wanted to do. Retail? No, I’ve had my fair share of retail experience. Starbucks? Though I enjoyed working there in the past, I don’t want those crazy 4am shifts or late-night shifts 7 days a week at a high paced, high energy job. Day care? That seemed like a good option. Working with babies and young kids is in my heart, I’ve worked with young children since I was a freshman in high school and haven’t stopped working with them since. It is what I am comfortable with and what I have experience doing. I applied at a day care but wanted more options so I continued my hunt. My best friend suggested to apply to her job, as they were looking for another child care provider in their keiki room at Oahu Spine and Rehab. So, I applied and within one week of landing I had my interview and started working.

Now that I work for this company, Oahu Spine & Rehab in Kailua, I wanted to know more about what was going on down the hall in the office. Whenever I would go into the office I saw people doing physical therapy, getting trigger point, traction, x-rays, e-stim, and chiropractic care. I soon began to understand why parents where picking up their keiki a little happier and more relaxed. I’ve witnessed a mother have to turn down her daughter’s see you later hug because she was in so much pain she couldn’t bend down or tolerate the embrace. I now see this same mother leaning down and embracing her son and daughter every time she drops them off with see you soon hugs and kisses.

Seeing the trend of parents coming in, in pain and leaving with more and more relief after each appointment gave me the motivation and courage to just schedule a consultation visit with Dr. Machado. I was skeptical that I wouldn’t be able to find any release with my unpredictable shooting pain in my back, that sometimes had me in tears. After I met with Dr. Machado, he took some x-rays. Fortunately, the x-rays didn’t show anything severe. Unfortunately, that meant we didn’t know exactly what was causing the pain. After we discussed the x-rays Dr. Machado walked me through the four phases to getting back my life of having no pain.

Phase one, getting pain relief. We needed to get rid of the pain I was having to prevent the pain from getting worse. Phase two, corrective care. What is causing me to have this intense, severe pain? bad posture? Incorrect form while lifting? Relying on bigger muscle groups and letting supporting, surrounding muscle become weak? Phase three, strengthening. I knew what muscle was causing this pain, that was very clear especially when it acted up. I need to work on strengthening those supporting muscle group surrounding my injured muscle. I want and need my muscles to be balanced. Phase four, Maintenance. Personally, I see this as the most important phase. After going through the first 3 phases, I will want to maintain the work I’ve done.

I am currently in phase one here at OSR in Kailua, and already with the stretches and the strengthening workouts I’ve received from the physical therapist, trigger points and modalities I have had done by our massage therapist, along with chiropractic care from the doc, I have already noticed less flare ups I have had with my back. I am looking forward to moving on to the other three phases and getting rid of my back pain for good! For the help I received so far, I am so grateful. The best thing you can do for yourself is take the time to take care of your body. If you are having any pain, get it checked, you will be forever grateful when your back to living life with no more pain. Call today to make an appointment at 488-5555!
