With OSR’s new branch, OSR Weight Management, we are hoping to help patients in their weight loss goals while still providing them with the protein and nutrients to sustain their health. Often, people spend too much time researching crash and fad diets that won’t give them long term results. In order to promote healthy weight loss, you must try to burn more calories in a day than you are eating. There are multiple measurements that are available to see if you are at a healthy weight.
Your BMI is your body mass index that calculates how heavy you are for your height and if you are in the underweight, healthy, overweight, or obese category for your height. Similar to how during annual physicals for your children, the doctor will pull out the BMI chart and show you where your child is compared to his or her peers on the BMI chart. Although BMI results can be skewed if you have a very muscular build, it is usually very accurate. A healthy BMI is 18.5 to 24.9.
Another measurement that doctors use is the waist to height ratio. This can show them if belly fat is a concern to your health. Belly fat is linked to more risks such as heart attacks, strokes and diabetes. A healthy waist to height ratio is 0.42 and 0.48! Both of these measurements can help your doctor assess how likely you are to have weight related health problems.
The safest way to lose weight is slowly. One pound to two pounds per week is the safest amount of weight that should be lost, if you are shedding pounds faster than that, there is a good chance you will gain all the weight back.
