Contrary to popular belief, living in pain is not an inevitable part of OA of the knee. Treatment options vary from patient to patient but include non-drug therapy such as exercise, weight loss if appropriate, and physical therapy. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are also used, as well as intra-articular corticosteroid injections. For patients that continue to suffer from pain after more conservative treatment options have failed or if they are not a candidate for these measures, Orthovisc can be an option.
Orthovisc is an FDA-approved, non drug therapy that contains hyaluronic acid, or natural joint fluid, and acts to cushion, protect, and lubricate the knee affected by OA. It is injected into the knee joint and can provide up to 6 months of knee pain relief. It is covered by most insurances and can be injected in office with little to no recovery time.
