Kinesio Taping for Carpal Tunnel

Here at Oahu Spine and Rehab you may have noticed our therapy department using colorful tape and taping up other patients in the back. Not to mention members of our staff walking around with this same tape on their hands and arms. Kinesio Tape is a rehabilitative taping technique that was created to improve the stability of joints and muscles by providing soft tissue manipulation. This means that the tape is serving as an external muscle and external support for your muscles and joints. Here at OSR, a lot of our team members are using their hands on patients all day. Whether it’s our physical therapists performing manual therapy or our massage therapists working on trigger point, you could say OSR employees are VERY hands-on.

One condition that is common here in our office from our massage therapists to our billing department is hand pain. While common at OSR because of the repetitive nature of the job, hand pains, finger pain, and carpal tunnel are very common conditions around the island of Oahu too. Carpal tunnel comes from repetitive wrist motions like computer work, workouts and sports, construction, etc. These things can cause inflammation and swelling in the hands and in the carpal tunnel which is a passageway in the wrist that is surrounded by bone and connective tissue. Because of this swelling, the pressure on the median nerve in the hand can cause aching, pain, numbness and tingling in the wrist and hands.

Kinesio tape is used in the OSR office to reduce hand swelling, pain and inflammation that is related to carpal tunnel. By using Kinesio tape on the wrist and fingers, you are reducing the pressure on the underlying structures of the hand. The tape allows full range of motion unlike other carpal tunnel braces, and it can provide pain and inflammation relief. When we are k-taping here in Kailua, we provide a long stabilizing structure by placing the tape down the forearm as well as over the fingers. Are you looking for pain relief from your carpal tunnel?
