For many years chiropractic care has been used to help treat back pain and other health issues. Chiropractic care is health maintenance of the spinal column, discs, related nerves and bone geometry without drugs or surgery. But is this practice safe for women who are expecting and suffering from back pain? Some expecting parents fear that chiropractic care can injure and or disrupt the growth of their growing fetus, but actually there are no known contraindications to chiropractic care throughout pregnancy. On the contrary many women who have had chiropractic care during pregnancy say that they have felt that it actually made them more comfortable and relieve some of the pregnancy induced problems. Some of these problems women experience during pregnancy are low back pain, hip and groin pain, wrist pain, and ankle or foot pain.
Throughout pregnancy a woman’s body goes through many physiological and hormonal changes that can often cause a woman discomfort. Not only does a woman’s body grow larger causing the center of gravity to change, breast size usually increases and causes strain on the upper back. The body also produces a hormone called Relaxin during pregnancy, this hormone allows more flexibility in ligaments which then affects joints. In most cases flexibility in the joints of the pelvis are the most noticeable. This increase mobility in the joints can cause pelvic imbalances as well as postural imbalances. This will then change a women’s gait (the way they walk) and is usually very uncomfortable for most women.
All of these discomforts can be helped and in some cases become almost nonexistent with gentle adjustments and controlled manipulation of the musculoskeletal system. Although the thought may scare some, and the sound is often “weird” or “creepy” sounding, there is no danger in receiving chiropractic care during pregnancy. And if some women are fearful to attempt this treatment, it is reassuring to know that all chiropractors are trained to work with women who are pregnant during their extensive education.
As a previously pregnant woman who received chiropractic care during pregnancy, I would definitely encourage and reassure women everywhere to give it a chance! It helped me with not only my low back tightness, I also feel that it helped with my speedy and easy delivery. I trusted my chiropractor and he always asked how I felt and let me know what he was doing at all times.
