Botulinum toxin is a manufactured injectable medication used therapeutically to reduce the strength of targeted muscle tissues. Botox works by binding to the nerve in the muscle and reduces its ability to contract. This can result in improving the look of moderate to severe wrinkles on your face, reduce the intensity and severity of migraines, help to manage TMJ pain, and more. Here at Oahu Spine & Rehab, we couldn’t pass these benefits for our patients up!
Cosmetically, Botox is used to reduce the lines on the face that are caused by repetitive creasing and folding of the skin by underlying muscles which originate on bone and insert on skin or soft tissue. These lines are referred to as “dynamic” wrinkles, or “wrinkles in motion.” As we age muscles of facial expression become hyperdynamic because of habit and by relaxing these muscles we allow the skin to recover. As the effect wears off, strength gradually returns along with the wrinkles caused by movement. Typical length of treatment is 3-6 months and typical areas of treatment are glabellar/frown lines (between the eyebrows), horizontal forehead lines, Crow’s feet, and radial lip lines (smoker’s lines).
Medically, Botox is used in the treatment of chronic migraines, overactive bladder, hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating), TMJ pain and much more. By relaxing the muscles used in these areas, Botox can help to prevent or lessen the severity and frequency of headaches, jaw clenching, pain, axilla sweating, and urinary frequency. Treatment duration is the same and patients are typically retreated after 3-6 months. Not only can Botox be a great option for your chronic pain, but our medical staff will work with you on options and what is best for your personal situation. OSR is happy to now offer Botox to our patients here in Kailua! If you are interested in getting Botox, or just want to learn more schedule an appointment with Emily today by calling 488-5555!
