Ankylosing Spondylitis

Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS) is a certain form of arthritis what primarily affects the spine. AS causes the spinal joints to become inflamed which lead to chronic pain and discomfort in your back. In severe cases, this inflammation can lead to new bone formations that can lead to a permanent posture problem. Not only can the new bone leave your spine immobile, but it can leave you with terrible back pain. Every case of AS is different, some AS patients also get inflammation in other joints such as the hips, heels, and in the smaller joints in their hands and feet. The most commonly effected joint is that of the Sacroiliac- SI Joints in the hip.

There is no cure for Ankylosing Spondylitis, although like other types of arthritis, there are options for treating your comfortability and pain. Here at Oahu Spine & Rehab in Kailua, we work with patients every day that are suffering from arthritis, whether Osteoarthritis or Ankylosing Spondylitis. Our physical therapists work with our medical staff to come up with your very own personalized treatment plan in order to ease your pain as much as possible.

Ankylosing Spondylitis recommended treatment varies from physical therapy, heat and cooling techniques. Along with that there are certain stretches that you can complete in order to help stretch and ease your pain. AS is sometimes responsible for shortening your spine and muscles in your back. If you consistently are exercising the muscles and joints that AS effects, then you may be more mobile. AS may be causing your hips to be tight and achy, stretching them out by slowly lifting your legs in each direction while standing up. Just doing basic movement like walking and moving around during the day can change your pain tenfold.
