Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS) is a certain form of arthritis that primarily affects the spine. AS causes the spinal joints to become inflamed, which lead to chronic pain and discomfort in your back. In severe cases, this inflammation can lead to new bone formations that can lead to a permanent posture problem. Not only can the new bone leave your spine immobile, but it can leave you with terrible back pain. Every case of AS is different, some AS patients also get inflammation in other joints such as the hips, heels, and in the smaller joints in their hands and feet. The most commonly effected joint is that of the Sacroiliac- SI Joints in the hip.
There is no cure for Ankylosing Spondylitis, however, like other types of arthritis, there are options for treating your discomfort and pain.
